Heat pump check 3.
Heat pump outdoor unit not working.
Why is there low or no air flow from my heat pump.
Heat pump not heating.
To warm your cold inside air the heat pump s outdoor unit uses liquid refrigerant to absorb heat from the outside air.
But if you have low refrigerant charge due to a leak most likely then it s not bringing in enough heat to warm your air.
During winter it is common to find the outside unit of the heat pump covered in in light ice and frost and this does not affect the working of the pump.
However if the entire unit is covered with snow and ice this is an indication of a problem.
First clean away leaves and debris from your heat pump or intake and exhaust vents.
Heat pump troubleshooting tips for summer icing.
Think of it like trying to pour a thimble of hot water on a glacier.
Before checking your outdoor compressor unit turn off your emergency heat and return your thermostat back down to the normal heat function and proceed with your heat pump troubleshooting outside.
This is a very common problem whether it s an air conditioner or a heat pump.
If the heat pump turns on when you want cool air but not for heat this is likely the cause.
Then note any changes in airflow.
Is your outdoor unit working properly.
As the name suggests the reversing valve allows the heat pump to work as both a heater and an air conditioner by reversing the direction of the refrigerant.
Heat pump outdoor unit runs but indoor blow does not i guess a lot of people would not notice something like this but i sleep close to the indoor unit and can hear the outdoor heat pump unit kick on.
If the air handler or indoor blower assembly does not start in response to a call for cooling the no start problem is probably at the indoor thermostat or at the blower assembly itself.
The outdoor unit could be obstructed clear away debris like grass clippings sticks leaves and weeds.
If the indoor air handler blower runs but the outdoor compressor condenser unit never starts then the problem is more likely there.
A bad capacitor can t properly power your ac s fan meaning the fan can t spin.
Capacitors may also go bad for several other reasons.
The sweltering outdoor heat coupled with the internal heat produced within the ac unit itself can sometimes overwhelm a capacitor causing it to fail.
If this doesn t work contact your trane comfort specialist.
If your heat pump is freezing up in summer on either the indoor or outdoor unit you could have a refrigerant leak clogged filter or very dirty coils that are keeping heat from transferring as it should.
I have noticed sometimes i am in cooling mode not all the time the outdoor unit will come on and run but the indoor blower will not.
